Beyond the Game Drive

Alternative ways to explore the wilderness.

When you think safari, you might imagine sitting in a vehicle in search of elephants and leopards. While most visitors to Africa will see game primarily by vehicle, there are other ways to be on safari and see the wildlife.

On your next safari, how about getting out of your Landcruiser and trying a new wildlife experience!

Pole or paddle in a mokoro canoe

Slip into a mokoro (dug-out canoe) and explore the Okavango Delta waterways or paddle yourself down the iconic Zambezi River. Discover the tranquility as you pass tiny reed frogs, kingfishers and elephants walking along the banks.

Ride the African desert on an e-bike

Feel the wind in your hair as you e-bike over the vast plains and legendary dunes of the Namib Desert, catching a glimpse of springbok, ostrich and oryx as you go.

Get low in a photographic hide

Imagine being at foot level with elephants or giraffes as they come to the water to drink. You’ll feel like you’re part of the herd as you sit in the splash free zone in safety.

Sleep under the African Stars

Have you ever wanted to sleep under a star-studded African sky listening to hippos snorting close by?

Imagine lying in your Star Bed as a fiery red sun slowly sinks below the horizon line. Dusk brings a jackal calling in the distance. Then the whooping of a lone hyena, followed by what sounds like cackles of laughter. Only a night in a Star Bed can offer this once in a lifetime experience. Experience sleeping under the stars →

Fly above the action in a hot air balloon

It’s an early start but well worth it as you float above the peaceful safari plains watching the sun rise. You’ll gain a new perspective of the landscape and wildlife below. A champagne breakfast awaits you at the landing site where you can toast to another dreamy day in Africa.

Take it slow on a barge cruise

With your binoculars in one hand and a drink in the other, enjoy an easy cruise down the river. You never know who will appear at the riverbank. Hippos snort as you drift past, and elephants raise their trunks like snorkels while you ponder what awaits you in the picnic basket for lunch.

Track Gorillas in the Wild

Meet a mountain gorilla for the first time and you'll immediately question your own place in the world. For one precious hour, watch tender, amusing gorilla family antics unfold. See your own habits and gestures reflected in their movements, careful grooming and boisterous play.

Walk in the footsteps of Rhinos

It’s a breathtaking experience. Camouflaged by the foliage, and careful not to make a sound, you will view one of Africa’s most iconic and endangered creatures. Whether following in the tracks of a rhino in Zambia or Namibia, you’ll be accompanied by an experienced tracker and have an opportunity to take part in ongoing monitoring projects to protect the world’s last remaining rhinos.

View wildlife from the water

Glide along Botswana’s wildlife-rich waterways or Zimbabwe’s mighty Zambezi river viewing game from the water banks or in the water. Being on the water lends a different perspective in fresh surroundings, where no two days are ever the same.
