DESTINATION

Johannesburg, South Africa

Johannesburg serves as the main International Airport for arrival into southern Africa. Many travelers spend a night here at the beginning or end of their African adventure, as there are plenty of upscale, interesting hotels and restaurants in this city.  Jo’Burg is South Africa’s economic capital, and there are plenty of interesting sites to take in, such as an eye-opening tour of the township of Soweto, where Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu both resided at one time.

ACCOMMODATION | 1 NIGHT

Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa

You would be forgiven for not even realizing you are in the Johannesburg city center when residing at this lush, landscaped urban sanctuary. It's at one and the same time elegant, smart and casual, with a plush country home ambiance.

Travel Itinerary: Day 2-4

DESTINATION

Makgadikgadi Pans Game Reserve, Botswana

The strange landscape of the Makgadikgadi salt pans offers unparalleled photographic opportunities on this safari. While you walk with Bushmen to hear just how they live off this land, wonder at the area’s transformation by the seasonal rains, which attracts zebras and wildebeests in numbers to rival the Serengeti migration. Friendly and curious meerkats are a special highlight of this area.

ACCOMMODATION | 2 NIGHTS

San Camp

Splendid pavilion tents create a wildly romantic camp out here on the mysterious Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, a dried-up super-lake. Meet San Bushmen, meerkats and zebras. Take a quad-bike to nowhere across this Kalahari Desert landscape.

Travel Itinerary: Day 4-7

DESTINATION

Okavango Delta, Botswana

The Okavango is a water wonderland with a range of habitats; the annual floodwater from the north arriving over Kalahari sand can be seen from space! Lodges perch over swirling pools where hippos and croc glide, and don’t be surprised if your staff greet you with African song! Incomparable game viewing abounds from the boat, mokoro canoe, 4X4, on foot, or aerial light aircraft on your way to your lodge.

ACCOMMODATION | 3 NIGHTS

Little Vumbura

This classic safari camp is shaded by an ancient forest and surrounded by floodplains, and clear water channels, for which the Okavango Delta is famed. Sit in the plunge pool overlooking the floodplains and go game viewing by mokoro canoe.

Travel Itinerary: Day 7-9

DESTINATION

Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, Botswana

It feels as if you have Africa all to yourself in this region; wildlife awaits around every sandy bend in the path. All senses come alive on game in the Linyanti Game Reserve, situated between the Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta. Sage crushed underfoot sends up fresh scent, glossy starling wings catch the sun, and hippos are so close you can feel the water mist as they plunge back underwater. Rivers, marshes and wetlands attract all wildlife in the vicinity, just for your viewing pleasure, it seems!

ACCOMMODATION | 2 NIGHTS

King’s Pool

This sumptuous camp overlooks an oxbow lagoon in a wildlife corridor, where game like elephants and lions can traverse freely. When not on game drives, walks or boat cruises, sit in a hide and see animals really close up.

Travel Itinerary: Day 9-11

DESTINATION

Livingstone, Zambia

One of the world’s largest waterfalls can be seen from the unique vantage point of Devil’s Pool, right on the edge of Victoria Falls. This is a bucket-list must-see, and does not disappoint! Don a poncho in April and May and walk out to the middle of the suspended bridge for a full view of the ‘smoke that thunders.’ Nearby riverside lodges offer sunset cruises that can take you close to the curtain of the falls, where you can feel the strength of the water pounding into the earth below.

ACCOMMODATION | 3 NIGHTS

Toka Leya

Relaxing beside the Zambezi River with elephants wandering past is the ideal start or finish to your African safari. Spend mornings boating on the river, game viewing or visiting Victoria Falls, and afternoons at the spa, practicing yoga, or watching the river flow.
