11 Interesting Facts about Maasai

1. They speak a language called Maa

2. Reports state there are over 1.6 million tribal members living between Kenya and Tanzania

3. The women build their homes, which they call manyatta; and the men build a fence around the village to protect them from lions

4. The Maasai have their own traditional wardrobe, typically red sheets known as shuka.

5. Maasai members pride themselves on their cows and live a semi-nomadic lifestyle to ensure green pastures for their cows, sheep, and goats.

6. The Masaai believe cows are sacred, and wealth and status is linked to the number of cows a Maasai tribesman owns.

7. The Maasai Tribe are mostly polygamous and marriages are often arranged by the elders.

8. Children in the Maasai Tribe are not typically named until they are three months of age, due to a high mortality rate

9. The Maasai follow their own calendar

10. There are three distinct seasons for the Maasai: the long rains, the season of drizzles, and the short rains.

11. Masaai drink the blood of animals, often mixed in milk, which is their source of protein and calories.
