Focus: Mara Plains Camp, Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
Mara Plains Camp is almost completely camouflaged, nestled in the thick forest next to the Ntiakitiak River. Situated inside the private 35,000-acre Olare Motorogi Conservancy and bordering Kenya’s Maasai Mara Reserve, this camp offers an intimate experience for just 14 guests in one of the most iconic wildlife destinations on the planet.
The design and decor of Mara Plains Camp is classic and tasteful, paying homage to the essence of East Africa. Swahili heritage is reflected in large wooden doors from the island of Lamu and accents of red are abundant throughout to honor the great Maasai chiefs and warriors. With the rich leather, copper and brass used in campaign-style furniture, enjoy a fashionable yet comfortable atmosphere that compliments the surrounding wilderness.
One of only five camps in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, Mara Plains has unrivaled access to more than 100,000 acres of private land; prime habitat for a number of wildlife species, as well as unfettered access to the 375,000-acre Maasai Mara Reserve. Take an early morning, late afternoon, and night game drives in open, four-wheel-drive vehicles. There is also the option of getting to know more about the local Maasai Community with a visit to a nearby village. Balloon flights over the Masai Mara can be easily arranged. Mara Plains is one of only three Relais & Chateaux properties in Kenya.
