Johannesburg serves as the main International Airport for arrival into southern Africa. Many travelers spend a night here at the beginning or end of their African adventure, as there are plenty of upscale, interesting hotels and restaurants in this city. Jo’Burg is South Africa’s economic capital, and there are plenty of interesting sites to take in, such as an eye-opening tour of the township of Soweto, where Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu both resided at one time.

Sabi Sands, in the south of Kruger, has many privately-owned game reserves that adjoin the park, offering a more intimate, uncrowded view of the game. Lodges and camps are luxurious, often with beautiful appointments, spas, and excellent, chef-prepared food.

Don a poncho in April and May and walk out to the middle of the suspended bridge for a full view of the ‘smoke that thunders.’ Nearby riverside lodges offer sunset cruises that can take you close to the curtain of the falls, where you can feel the strength of the water pounding into the earth below.
