Beyond the Big Five: Namibia Will Delight Even The Seasoned Africa Traveler
Are you looking for something different on your next safari?
After three decades designing custom safaris for my guests, my recent safari in December to Namibia reaffirmed what I already knew: Namibia is the perfect destination for those seeking respite from the crowds and chaos of the world. With its expansive landscapes and sparse population, Namibia offers sanctuary to those yearning for solitude and serenity.
Its awe-inspiring landscapes range from dramatic and diverse to breathtakingly beautiful. But it's not just the scenery that sets Namibia apart; the country's rich cultural heritage and its remarkable desert-adapted species make it an exceptional choice for those seeking a refreshing and distinctive experience.
With something for everyone, Namibia is a playground for active adventurers, cultural enthusiasts, wildlife experts, and astrologers.
For the Adventure Seeker
Namibia offers unusual experiences. Climb the world's second-highest sand dunes at Sossusvlei, where towering rust-red sand dunes rise over salt and clay pans. Explore the otherworldly landscapes of the Namib Naukluft National Park, where sandstone formations rise like forgotten giants. Take in the stunning sunsets, and feel the cool desert breeze against your skin.
For the Wildlife Enthusiast
Namibia is home to some of the most iconic inhabitants of the animal kingdom. Watch desert-adapted oryx gracefully leap across the red dunes, marvel at the prehistoric charm of the black rhinoceros, and search for desert lions that feed off the resident seaside seal population. Namibia's elephants stand out among their peers with wide feet adapted to help them gracefully navigate the deep desert sand.
While Namibia might not be the first name that comes to mind for seeing the "big five," Etosha National Park stands out as a Southern African gem. Here, shimmering mirages dance above the vast Etosha salt pan, and the scene comes alive with a mesmerizing congregation of oryx, ostriches, giraffes, and elephants.
For Those In Search Of Authentic Cultural Interaction
Meet the nomadic Himba people, one of Africa’s last semi-nomadic tribes living in relative isolation in the unforgiving landscape of northwest Namibia much as they have for generations. Their tradition of applying otjize, a thick reddish paste of butter, fat and red ochre, on women’s faces and hair has become an iconic image of Africa.
For the History Buff
Visit the rock art of Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where ancient peoples etched their stories onto sandstone centuries ago. Unravel the complex colonial history in the vibrant capital, Windhoek, where German architecture blends with modern influences.
For Stargazers
Namibia is an astrologer’s delight. With cloudless night skies, especially in winter, Namibia offers breathtaking views of constellations, nebulae, Magellanic Clouds, and planets. The Namib Rand Nature Reserve is a gold-level dark sky reserve rated by the International Dark Sky Association. Lodges offer unique astronomy-based activities, including on-site observatories and resident astronomers.
