Unforgettable Encounters in Mozambique & Namibia: A Mother-Son Safari

Just Back from Africa

In early December, I took a three-week exploration safari to visit new camps in Mozambique and Namibia. Since my son, Porter, 22 yrs., was already in South Africa at the end of his internship, I asked him if he’d like to join me.

We started our trip in Cape Town where I took a scuba diving refresher course in the shark tank at the Two Oceans Aquarium. My heart still races thinking about sharks swimming less than three feet away from us, but that was just the beginning of our incredible mother-son safari.

In Mozambique, we traded land for sea, galloping on horseback through the turquoise Indian Ocean. Then, beneath the waves, we explored vibrant coral reefs teeming with colorful fish and gigantic turtles.

Namibia's landscapes stole our breath. We rode quad bikes through the desert sands and scaled towering red dunes in Sossusvlei, feeling dwarfed by their immensity. Under a canopy of a million stars, we shared stories and laughter beside a crackling campfire. And we even witnessed lions frolicking in the golden desert sands!

Our adventure concluded in the north with a serene boat ride down the Kunene River, where we encountered the semi-nomadic Himba people, their vibrant culture enriching our understanding of this unique land.
